TASTE OF CHICAGO CUT TO 5 DAYS IN 2012; WHAT A SHAME

The City of Chicago announced today that the Taste Of Chicago will be cut down from 10 days to only five days.  This is disappointing news for the millions who enjoyed the world largest food festival.   They also will move it to after the Fourth of July holiday (to July 11th – 15th), because they discontinued the fireworks.

Reports suggest the changes were made due to the huge decline in attendance this year.  But let’s face it, they eliminated the popular firework show and hired less known performers, so what did they think would happen?  What poor management of such a great event for our city.  It was a booming summer event in year’s past and brought huge revenue to area business owners and participants.  How could they have destroyed a “sure thing”.

This could be the end of the Taste, not only are they cutting the days, they plan to have even less popular performers next year.  It also will be turned back over to the Mayor’s office from the park district going forward.

What a huge loss this would be for our great city.  Where else can you buy overpriced food while crammed in a park filled with millions of hot sweaty people?   But it still was a lot of fun.

NEW LAWS COMING TO ILLINOIS IN 2012; SEAT BELT AND ELECTRONIC’S POLICE WHAT’S NEXT?

Big Brother continues to take away our power in the U.S. Rules and restrictions keep piling up and “Land of the Free” is turning into “Land of the Handcuffs”.   Next year Illinois residents will have to brace themselves for two new laws which take effect early 2012.

Beginning January 1, 2012, all back seat passengers will be required to wear a seatbelt. Buses and cabs are exempt, but this is probably when you need them most!  They claim it is designed to increase safety on the roads, but in reality it’s just another way to increase revenue in this financially depressed state.

CHICAGO RENTAL BUILDING SALES ON THE RISE; HOW LONG WILL THIS LAST?

CRAIN’S published a great article on apartment building sales in Chicago during 2011.  It may be a record year for transactions, which is not surprising.   Many owners who have lost their homes in short sales or foreclosures have re-entered the rental market again.   In this challenging housing market, rentals have become a popular alternative for many even though rents continue to climb.

During 2011 the rental rates are expected to increase approximately 10% in Chicago, which is good news for landlords but bad news for renters.  The demand for rental housing is making rental properties an attractive purchase.  Investor’s have resurfaced and new construction rental buildings are also on the rise.

But how long will this last?  Is this a start of a rental housing bubble, similar to the “for sale” crash of 2007.   It will be interesting to see just how many people continue to hold off buying a home and pouring money into a rental property.  Once their credit is repaired or they overcome the fear of securing a home, will they shift to homeownership again?   If so, will this cause a rental crash?

In most cases the rent vs. own scenario is alarming, Chicago tops the list for cities where it’s cheaper to own than to rent.  Let’s hope the American Dream of owning a home to offer a “nest egg” emerges once again.  While renting a home may be necessary for some at this point, it would be great to see it convert back to home ownership.  Interest rates are extremely low and housing prices are more affordable than ever…making it a perfect combination.

SEATTLE COUPLE LIVING IN MILLION DOLLAR MANSION; STILL GETS FOOD STAMPS & GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE

The Feds raided the home of a Seattle woman and her husband, who have been lucky enough to live in a beautiful million dollar mansion.  Amazingly enough, while receiving government assistance.  Yes, that’s right…our tax dollars have supported them!

Interesting…now millionaires qualify for food stamps?   Sounds pretty Republican to me.  If left up to some of the rich, this would be fitting, the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer.  And this is coming from someone who is not typically one to take a political side.

KING 5 News reported a story about an unidentified couple, residing in a $1.2 million home and collecting $1,200 a month in public housing vouchers.   They were greedy enough to also receive government disability checks and food stamps.  It’s still not clear who owns the home, but whatever the case, they are certainly NOT poor.

According to Federal documents, the Seattle couple has received $135,000 in housing subsidy payments and government assistance,  since 2003.   Apparently, when applying for help, government employees do not verify your home value and current laws do not require disclosure.  When they applied for help, they actually listed their real address in this upscale neighborhood near the water.  Maybe it’s time to update that policy?

Well, at least they have a good heart.  After being investigated, they were found to have donated some of it to charity.  But that was probably after their numerous trips to exclusive vacation destinations, including Mexico and Turkey.  They also had the nerve to own a Jaguar…driving in luxury while ripping off the government.  Shame on them.  They have not yet been charged, but it just may be coming…you think?

Must be nice to live in a luxurious home and still be considered “disadvantaged”.  And we wonder why our Country is broke.  Go figure…they get away with fraud for eight years, but the bank wants to evict a 103-year-old woman!
